Reduction Cuts Don't Work
If we check our work later, we can see that the trees grade us with their response. Shortening a leader or lateral does not work. The trees tell us this.
Efforts to prune less invasively by reducing a leader or lateral will cost you the limb later but not until after it harms the rest of the tree. Efforts to mediate the impact of removal cuts by employing reduction cuts delay but compound this feared impact.
The reason the temptation to compromise often exists is due to prior abuse and / or neglect. The proper prescription should never be additional abuse and / or neglect.
Cost: $600 for a 1-hour presentation plus travel and lodging if appropriate.
