Girdling Root Excavation for Fun and… Profit?
We can fully expect all new trees to be planted too deeply. It’s not that the holes are dug too deeply (although they may well be too). It’s that the trees are already buried too deeply before the hole is even dug. Sadly, most trees coming from local retail nurseries came to them from a wholesale nursery with soil up over the root flare and up the stem. If not corrected, this will be trouble. Correction comes with consequences, at least temporarily.
This presentation covers my experience with performing hundreds of girdling root excavations. It starts with the very first one I performed, goes through the success of saving hundreds of red maples (at least temporarily), and the simultaneous failure to make any money doing it. It discusses how we used water for many years and the air spade only recently. It talks about how much better the air spade is. It ends with the success of the very first excavation and current pictures of that tree.
Cost: $600 for a 1-hour presentation plus travel and lodging if appropriate.
We can present at your location or ours in the Quad City Area
If requested, ISA Certified Arborists will receive CEUs. TCIA Certified Treecare Safety Professionals will receive CTSP CEUs.
